  • Frame Drum

    Made around 1887 and painted by Thunder Elk in 1904, this frame drum’s yellow represents the earth and the dark blue associated with it represents the sky. Frame drums were used to accompany traditional song and dance.

  • Whistle

    Created in the 19th century, dancers held these symbolic crane head instruments during tribe dances.

  • Siyotanka

    Made sometime around 1850-1900, this Native American flute-like instrument is an aerophone. This flute represents a sounding mechanism unique to North American Indians, the external duct.
